Yuru Camp, also known as Laid-Back Camp, is a story created by the Japanese manga artist Afro. Anime, based on a manga series, first hit the screens in 2018. Yuru Camp is a popular anime series in the slice of life genre. Coming to the screens with a new season at the beginning of 2021, the anime delighted its fans. C-Station, which we haven’t seen much of in the anime industry, but proved its quality with the Yuru Camp series, undertakes the task of a creative studio. Originally aired on AT-X, Tokyo MX, and many local networks, the anime is also licensed by Crunchyroll. After the second season finale aired on April 1, 2021, fans are now curious about the third season. So will the anime have a third season? All the details we know so far…
What is the plotline of Yuru Camp?
The anime’s story is an ordinary story in the slice-of-life genre. But that’s not a disadvantage. Whatever the story is, it’s really well crafted. Shima Rin is a high school girl who loves camping alone. One day, when she goes camping alone, she encounters a girl named Kagamihara Nadeshiko, who has just moved to the city and has climbed the mountain where Rin is camping to see the view of Mount Fuji. While the two have just met, Nadeshiko is impressed by Rin’s camp, and she wants to camp. So she joins the “Outdoor Club” in her new school. There are only two members in this club; Inuyama Aoi and Oogaki Chiaki. Thus, with her new friends in her new city, Nadeshiko starts camping activities, which has become her new hobby.
Will there be a third season of Yuru Camp?
The second season of the anime aired between January 7, 2021 – April 4, 2021. The anime has just hit the screens, and it’s pretty early to get new season news. As of July 5, 2021, C-Station studio or any related company has not yet renewed the anime for a third season. It can take years to renew the anime. There are about three years between the first and the second season, so will we wait another three years? The answer is complicated, but when we look at the current popularity of anime, we believe we can see a new season. There is no official announcement yet, but we can speculate about the thirds season by reviewing some key factors.
March 27, 2021: A virtual reality game has been announced as will be released on October 30, 2021.
May 21, 2021: Yuru Camp anime series gets an OVA episode. The episode will be aired on July 28, 2021. The OVA is titled ‘Tabi-suru Shima Rin’.
Manga status and stock material adequacy
As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, the original manga was written and illustrated by Afro. Houbunsha is the publisher of the series. The manga, which started broadcasting on Manga Time Kirara Forward in July 2015, was transferred to Comic Fuz in 2019. The good news is that the manga series is still ongoing, and as of writing, the last volume will be released on April 12, 2021. It means extra source material for future anime seasons.
12 volumes have been prepared for the manga so far. 4 volumes were adapted in the first season of the anime, and the second season cover additional 5 volumes up to the 9th volume. If the remaining resource is material, it is not enough for a new season yet. An average of 2 volumes per year is publishing for manga. During this year, 2 volumes have already been released, together with the volume in April. With the volumes to be published in 2022, it seems that source material will be provided for a new season.
Disc sales and popularity
Disc sales and the associated popularity are highly valued for new season approvals. Because anime also have commercial goals. In general, the targets are, on average, 4,000 copy sales. When they exceed this sales figure, a new season is very likely if there is no problem with other factors. Yuru Camp reached 12,507 copies in BluRay and DVD sales in the first season. That’s a really good amount of sales! The second season disc sales have just started, and we do not have any clear data yet. But the current popularity holds promise for disc sales. (Update on 23.04.2021: The anime’s second season disc sales have surfaced. It sold 6250 units in the first volume, and this sales volume seems sufficient for a third season.)
The anime’s current popularity score is 83.2%. This score is enough to see a new season. Besides, the anime is followed by 315 thousand people on Twitter (@yurucamp_anime). In general, anime that reach over 100 thousand users can be said to be quite popular. It seems that the producers will be able to profit from the possible third season. In terms of popularity, there does not seem to be a problem for a new season.
Virtual reality game is coming
Another news that increases the probability of Season 3 is the new game news. The game, ‘Laid-Back Camp Virtual’, which will be released worldwide on September 30, 2021, will take place on many platforms. (Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android). Usually, the game news is a significant signal for the new season of anime.
A third season of the anime has not been confirmed yet. The anime is the most valuable product in C-Station’s hand. When we look at the current popularity, we think that nobody won’t say no to a new season. However, the manga does not yet provide enough source material for a third season. The stock material for a new season seems to be completed in 2022. Considering the time required for the production of the anime, we can only see the third season in 2023. Till then, we strongly recommend the beloved slice-of-life anime series Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life and Chihayafuru such as Yuru Camp.
