The anime originally started airing on local Japan networks, Tokyo MX, TVA, ABC, BS11, HTB on January 11, 2018. The production, licensed by Netflix, was also featured by big anime distributors such as Funimation, so the whole world was aware of this product. Violet Evergarden has gained an important place in the anime industry with its ratings, and after two years, new viewers are still discovering and recommending the series. The anime is animated by Kyoto Animation, the same studio as Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, another beloved anime series. The anime’s first season consisted of 13 episodes, and an OVA episode was released on July 4, 2018. The studio’s beloved anime, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, was renewed for its second season and aired in the summer of 2021. Can the same thing happen for Violet Evergarden? Fans are still excited for the second season. We have compiled all the known.
What was the plotline of the anime?
Auto memory toys are mechanical toys that people should record their speech and emotions. First of all, Dr. These toys, which Orlando made to make his wife happy, are sold to the public by companies after the working mechanism is learned. Over time, various groups also install functions that can be used in military operations on automatic memory toys. Violet Evergarden is one of these toys. With her charming beauty, Violet quickly becomes the most popular auto memory toy.
The anime begins in the hospital room. The war is over. Opening her eyes in the hospital room, Violet asks where Major Gilbert is, with whom she spent most of her time teaching her everything and fighting shoulder to shoulder. Coming to visit him, Lieutenant Colonel Hodgins tells him that he came at Major Gilbert’s request and should accompany him.
With the war over, Violet has to adjust to everyday life. Therefore, after a while, she starts working as a writer (or Automatic Memory Doll as she is called in the anime). The scribes must write letters. But not simply; The writers are the ones who transfer all the feelings and thoughts of the customer to the letter in the best way. On this path, Violet encounters the emotions of many people and different forms of love. Thus, each episode continues with a different letter and a different story.
Violet Evergarden the Movie (2020)
The spin-off film to the 10-episode anime released in 2018, the film continued to tell the adventures of Violet, the Auto Memory Doll, who could not forget Gilbert, who taught her love. One day, she meets her older brother, Dietfried, who says she must forget Major Gilbert and move on with her life. But this request is impossible for Violet. Shortly after, Violet gets a phone call from a young customer and finds a letter with no address in the post office warehouse. Used as a “tool” for war, a young girl learns to live. With the burn marks, she returns to his past to feel the Major’s true feelings.
Will there be a second season of the anime?
At the time of writing, as of May 27, 2022, the series has not yet been renewed for a second anime season. As its followers will remember, Kyoto Animation studio was set on July 18, 2019. For this reason, the release date of many productions of the studio was delayed. During the past years, the company has recovered. The movie’s expected release date for Violet Evergarden was announced as April 24, 2020, due to these events. However, it was once again delayed due to the ongoing pandemic. Violet Evergarden’s latest movie was released on September 18, 2020. According to the Japanese media, the last movie was the finale of the work. We still do not know what will happen in the future, but the following interview also indicates that we will not see a new season.
According to the Japon Media mantan-web, An interview with Shinichiro Hatta, the producer of the anime, was posted on the official website of the movie version of the anime “Violet Evergarden”:
“Violet Evergarden the Movie” is the finale of this work, which began with the television series. The staff made it with all their heart, and neither Director Ishidate nor Reiko Yoshida, the scriptwriter, can draw anymore. I hope you will warmly watch over the life of a woman named Violet. I strongly hope to share my feelings with the fans who have seen this work and connect those feelings to the future. Thank you very much.
Violet Evergarden: Light novel compared to anime and movies
As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, Violet Evergarden was adapted from a light novel written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takaseto for TV series. Like anime and movies, the L/N series published by Kyoto Animation began airing on December 25, 2015 and consists of 4 volumes in total. The last volume was published on March 27, 2020.
1 | December 25, 2015 |
2 | December 26, 2016 |
Gaiden | March 23, 2018 |
3 | March 27, 2020 |
Although the light novel inspires the anime series, it has an original plotline that progresses differently. The anime series, which also has chronological differences, still uses some parts of the light novel series. However, we can say that the anime series mostly covers the first and second volumes. Below is a comparative list.
Volume 1 | Light Novel | Anime |
Chapter 1 | Episode 7 | |
Chapter 2 | Episode 10 | |
Chapter 3 | Episode 11 | |
Chapter 4 | Episode 6 | |
Chapter 5 | N/A | |
Common (1&2) | Chapter 6&7 | Episode 8&9 |
Volume 2 | Chapter 8 | Episode 1 |
Chapter 9&10 | N/A | |
Chapter 11&12 | Episode 13 | |
Chapter 13 | Episode 12&13 |
Episodes 2 and 5, which do not appear on the list, have a completely original story. It didn’t add depth to Anime Gilbert and Violet’s past stories, and we strongly recommend reading the light novel for a lot of missing details on this subject. The OVA episode, on the other hand, was not a sequel, as audiences know. This episode, which we can specify as episodes 4,5th, was an intermediate story of episodes 4 and 5. Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll, released in 2019, was adapted from 2 chapters in the Gaiden volume. The last movie released in 2020 was again taking us to Chapter 13, but it had an original story with significant differences. It still seems like there are enough source materials, but it makes things difficult when the last movie is described as a finale in an interview with the animation team. If there is a change in the future, we will update it.
Anime | Release Date |

Can popularity change things?
Violet Evergarden was one of the most popular productions of recent years. It even has a special place among anime productions of all time. So much so that Myanimelist metrics show that the anime is the 51st most popular anime of all time. We see parallel popularity volume in Google searches worldwide. Violet Evergarden is still more searched after than popular anime like Fruits Basket or Mob Psycho 100, and there’s a huge fan base waiting for a second season. With 390k followers on Twitter, it again surpasses the animes we mentioned. Under normal circumstances, a new season of an anime that has reached this popularity is inevitable. We think that the creators will not ignore this popularity and will continue this series with new projects belonging to the anime, even if there is no new season in the future. Time will tell if there will be a new season. Stay tuned.
