TONIKAWA: Over the Moon For You (also known as Tonikaku Kawaii or Fly Me to the Moon), is a romantic comedy and slice-of-life anime that first premiered in 2020, quickly capturing the attention of viewers worldwide. Based on Kenjiro Hata’s manga series of the same name, Tonikawa isn’t original content but rather a faithful adaptation that brought the charming story to life.
Produced by Seven Arcs, the animation studio behind popular series like Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and Arte, Tonikawa stands out for its warm, heartfelt portrayal of love and its light-hearted comedy. Fly Me to the Moon initially aired in Japan from October 3 to December 19, 2020, on local TV channels.
Following its broadcast in Japan, the series gained massive popularity thanks to online streaming platforms, making it accessible to audiences across the globe. Crunchyroll holds the streaming rights to the anime, and it was through this service that fans were able to follow the second season, which made a season final on June 24, 2023, in Japan. Shortly after, a special 4-episode ONA series was released, but since then, there has been little to no news. Fans are eagerly awaiting news of a third season. So, will Tonikawa return for a third season? Here’s everything we know so far!
What is the plotline of the Tonikaku Kawaii?
Nasa Yuzaki is always getting teased for his unusual name, so he’s determined to stand out differently. And he’s doing great—he’s at the top of his class and gets into his dream school. But one night, everything changes when he meets a girl on the street. Totally mesmerized by her beauty, Nasa falls head over heels in love at first sight. But so caught up in his feelings, he doesn’t even notice the car speeding toward him until it’s almost too late.
Just when things seem like they’re about to take a turn for the worse, the girl steps in and saves him. In his grateful haze, Nasa blurts out a confession of love, and to his surprise, she agrees—on one condition: marriage! Nasa, totally overwhelmed but thrilled, accepts without hesitation. Then he falls asleep, and when he wakes up, she’s gone.
A year passes, and though Nasa’s completely healed, he can’t stop thinking about the girl. He puts aside everything else in his life and searches for her, but she’s nowhere to be found. That is, until one night, when a surprise visitor knocks on his door—the girl who’s about to become his wife and change his world forever.
Will there be a third season of the TONIKAWA?
The second season of Tonikawa wrapped up on June 24, 2023, and since then, the special ONA series was the last new content we’ve gotten. Unfortunately, there’s been no word on a third season yet. Neither Shogakukan, the publisher of the manga, nor the studio behind the anime have made any official announcements regarding a new season.
The renewal of anime seasons often depends on factors like the availability of source material and the overall popularity of the show, so it can take some time. While it’s not always a positive outcome, shows that continue to get good feedback and show promise have a higher chance of getting a new season. Since there hasn’t been any official news yet, let’s dive into the factors that could influence Tonikawa’s future and try to make some educated guesses about what might come next.
Manga (Source Material)
As we mentioned earlier, the Tonikawa anime is based on the manga series written and illustrated by Kenjiro Hata. The Tonikawa manga first began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Sunday on February 14, 2018, and it’s still going strong today. As of January 2025, the manga has released 30 volumes, with new volumes coming out every two to three months on average. Plus, Viz Media publishes the manga in English, making it accessible to even more fans.
The ongoing release of the manga is great news for the anime. The second season of the anime only adapted 14 volumes, leaving more than half of the source material still available for future seasons. So, there’s no shortage of content for a potential new season!

Popularity and other factors
Looking at the popularity of the Tonikawa series, things are looking good. When we assess the anime’s popularity through platforms like MyAnimeList, social media, and Google searches, it’s clear that Tonikawa still enjoys strong fan support. The anime is ranked among the top 200 on MyAnimeList and has around 114k followers on X. In general, an anime with over 100k followers has a strong chance of getting a new season, and it’s safe to say that Tonikawa’s Google search volume is also above average. So, the anime’s solid popularity is a good sign for its renewal.
Although the anime hasn’t performed exceptionally well in disc sales, online streaming platforms have made physical sales less of a priority these days. The series has kept its momentum high with OVA and ONA releases, along with the ongoing manga, which helps keep the Tonikawa franchise alive and thriving. All things considered, it seems unlikely that a new season is out of the question.
As for the studio, Seven Arcs may not be one of the biggest animation studios, but Tonikawa is clearly one of their most valuable projects, so it’s hard to imagine them saying no to a new season. The studio’s current anime schedule doesn’t seem too packed, so we think there’s plenty of room for a new season of Tonikawa to be created.
When is the release date of the second season?
While there’s no official word yet on a third season of Tonikawa, the signs are positive. The manga is ongoing, with plenty of material left for adaptation, and the anime enjoys strong popularity across online platforms. Although DVD sales haven’t been exceptional, online streaming has kept the franchise thriving with OVA and ONA releases. Given Seven Arcs’ relatively open schedule and the anime’s solid fan support, it’s likely we’ll see a third season. However, until an official announcement is made, this remains a speculation.
Production timelines for anime seasons usually take about a year if everything goes smoothly. If a renewal happens soon, it’s possible we could see a new season somewhere in 2026. Let’s also remember that there was a three-year gap between the first and second seasons. We’ll keep you updated if anything changes!
