That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, also known as TenSura, is an anime series that first aired in fall 2018 in Japan and worldwide, thanks to Crunchyroll and Funimation. Many anime lovers who are interested in anime culture have a special interest in Isekai anime. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was one of the successful productions of this genre. It first appeared before the readers as a web novel series and then light novel and manga. The ongoing light novel series written by Fuse has been adapted into anime by the studio, Eight Bit. The Studio had previously appeared in front of the audience with popular productions such as Tokyo Ravens. After the successful season of TenSura, the anime broadcast on many leading local networks in Japan was renewed for a second season. After the spin-off series called The Slime Diaries, the anime returned to the screens with its second season between October 2, 2018 – September 21, 2021. Fans are now excited for the third season. So, has the anime been renewed for a new season? When will Crunchyroll release it? Let’s remember the series and take a look at all that is known about the third season.
The story is about a 37-year-old single man named Satoru Mikami. Although his business life is quite smooth, he is a lonely white-collar worker. One day, when he meets his friends from work on the street, he is stabbed to death by an unidentified assailant. At the moment of death, he hears some voices and orders that he cannot understand. Satoru wakes up after his death and realizes that he was reincarnated and born in another world. He came to this world as a slime. He has gained special powers in this life and has unique abilities. When he swallows something he sees, he can imitate it with everything, including its abilities and appearance. After adapting to his new character, Satoru wanders through a cave and hears a voice. He doesn’t know who he is because he has no eyes, but they realize that they are both very lonely. After a while, the voice says that he is Veldora and can teach Satoru how to see. In return, he tells him not to be afraid when he sees him because Veldora is a dragon.
The Storm Dragon Veldora has been held in a sealed captive for three centuries after he burned down a town. Satoru is not afraid of Veldora; on the contrary, he bonds with him due to their loneliness and says he will help to save him. In return, Veldora grants Satoru a divine shield of protection and names him Rimuru Tempest. Rimuru, who now has a completely different life path, begins an exciting journey with new goals and changes the fate of the world step by step.
Will there be a third season of the anime?
The anime’s second season finale aired on September 21, 2021. As of December 13, 2021, at the time of writing, its animation studio Eight Bit, or any related company with the anime, has not yet renewed it for a third season. Even if an anime is popular, the confirmation can be long due to the long production times in the anime industry. Although this wait is mostly turned out to be negative, some animes give the signals that they will have a new season. When we examine the source material, the light novel, the popularity of the anime, the disc sales, and the distributors, it is possible to speculate about whether there will be a new season.
We mentioned that the anime is not an original series and is an adaptation. The light novel, written by Japanese author Fuse and illustrated by Mitz Vah, was originally published by Micro Magazine since 2014. In addition, thanks to Yen Press, it is possible to follow the series in English. With the anime’s volume released on March 31, 2021, the total number of volumes reached 18. (Yen Press at Volume 12 currently). Animes also increase sales of light novels, so it’s good news that the series is ongoing.
On the other hand, to create a new season, the light novel must already contain sufficient source material. The first 3 volumes were adapted in the first season of the anime. A similar amount of source material was used in the second season, and the events up to volume 6 of the light novel are featured in the anime’s second season. The remaining source material is currently 12 volumes, and it seems there is enough source material for the third season and more seasons.
Manga adaptation rate
Popularity is the most important requirement for an anime to continue if enough source material is available. The light novel and manga of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime are hugely popular and therefore have huge popularity potential for the anime series. Making good use of this chance, the anime managed to be among the top 100 anime in Myanimelist. There is also a strong Google search volume for anime. The anime, which is also very popular in Japan, is followed by 260k people on Twitter. Animes such as Beastars, I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years, which have a similar audience, managed to get the new season approval already.
Disc sales are also important for anime. The anime’s disc sales took place in Spring 2021, with an average of 1628 copies sold, generating approximately ¥54,520,000 in revenue. Although these disc sales are far from the targets, it needs to take into account the decrease in disc sales in recent years. Anime easily fills this gap with its current popularity. It seems that there is no problem in terms of popularity so that the anime can have a new season.

When is the third season of TenSura?
As of December 13, 2021, the anime has yet to be renewed for a third season. However, as a result of our evaluation, we see a high probability of a new season. Since there is no official renewal yet, predicting the new season date is difficult. Eight Bit is working very actively on the series, and if we include the spin-off series, we see that the gap between anime seasons is not many years. Still, there were close to 2 years between the first and the second seasons. With a similar probability, the anime’s third season may air in late 2023. But for now, this estimate is just speculation. We will update our article as official information becomes available. Stay tuned.
What can season 3 be about?
In the final episode of the anime’s second season, Clayman unexpectedly learns new abilities, surprising Rimuru. Rimuru uses all his strength to capture Clayman. Veldora’s being in a fight with Milim makes it even more difficult to save Clayman from the Demon Lord. Although Clayman’s new powers protect him for a while, Rimuru becomes the winner again and ends the rivalry.
We will start the new season by watching the effects of Clayman losing the competition. The Holy Lubelius Empire had launched an attack on Rimuru under the leadership of Hinata Sakaguchi, the commander of the crusader forces. Now they will deal with the possibility that this attack will come back to them in retaliation. Due to political reasons, Rimuru and Hinata will meet. After the bilateral agreements, Rimuru will prepare a large-scale event for the war tournament called The Tempest Founder’s Festival, which will include concerts and dungeons. At the last moment, selected hero Honjou will be included in this tournament. Let’s see what awaits us at this grand event.
