The romantic comedy genre holds a cherished place in Japanese anime and manga culture. Oresuki (Ore wo Suki Nano wa Omae Dake ka yo), based on the light novel series by Rakuda and illustrated by Buriki, is one of the notable entries in this genre. The anime adaptation, produced by Studio Connect, debuted in 2019. This studio is also known for other romantic comedies like Senryu Girl. Directed by Noriaki Akitaya, the series aired on local networks such as Tokyo MX, BS11, and ytv, and it reached international audiences via Funimation and Crunchyroll. The anime, which ran from October 3, 2019, to December 26, 2019, comprised 12 episodes, followed by an OVA in September 2020. Despite its widespread popularity, there has been no announcement of a second season as of yet. Fans remain hopeful, eagerly awaiting any news of the show’s continuation.
What is the plotline of Oresuki?
Amatsuyu Kisaragi, the protagonist, finds himself invited by two girls: the elegant Sakura Akino and his cheerful childhood friend Aoi Hinata. He expects to hear love confessions from both, but to his surprise, they confess their love for someone else—Amatsuyu’s friend.
Amatsuyu believes no girl could truly like him until Sumireko Sanshokuin enters the picture. Sumireko, often overlooked due to her sharp tongue and nerdy appearance, secretly harbors feelings for him. Despite her prickly demeanor, she seems to enjoy provoking Amatsuyu, creating an unusual yet charming dynamic. The series humorously explores their evolving relationships, revealing layers of each character’s personality and motivations.
Will there be a second season of Oresuki?
As of January 7, 2025, Studio Connect or any related companies have yet to officially confirm the renewal of Oresuki for a second season. While it’s not uncommon for anime to take years to renew, the elapsed time between seasons does not necessarily diminish the chances of a continuation. Currently, there is no official statement or even a credible rumor about the production of a second season. However, a number of factors can still influence the possibility of a new season. Let’s start with the availability of source material:
Light novel status of Oresuki in terms of a second season
As mentioned earlier, the light novel that inspired Oresuki was written by Rakuda and illustrated by Buriki. It was first published by ASCII Media Works on February 10, 2016. While there is no official English-language publisher as of now, the series has gained substantial popularity in Japan, suggesting a potential future translation.
As of November 2024, a total of 16 volumes have been released. Unfortunately, this marks the end of the series, as the 17th volume that was released in 2022 was the final one. In the first season of the anime, only the first five volumes were adapted, which means there is enough source material for a second season. However, since the light novel series is completed, the advertising and promotional activities for it have slowed down, which may decrease the likelihood of an anime continuation in the future.
BluRay and DVD sales of the first season
Anime productions are typically created to support light novels/mangas or to generate profit. While Blu-ray and DVD sales may not hold the same weight as they did in the past due to the rise of exclusive streaming platforms, these sales still provide an important gauge of popularity in Japan. Traditionally, an anime is expected to sell around 4,000 copies before a new season is considered.
Unfortunately, Oresuki fell short of this threshold, selling only 1,015 copies in the first season. This would typically indicate that a second season is unlikely based on disc sales alone. However, it’s important to note that sales have been declining across the board in recent years, as viewing habits have shifted away from physical media. The growing availability of streaming services and online distributors is now a more significant factor.
Currently, the anime is not available on major services like Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu. However, it has been distributed exclusively by a major video distributor in China, which could still yield significant profit due to China’s large population.
Popularity and Other Key Factors
Aside from sales, the overall popularity of an anime in both Japan and internationally plays a crucial role in the decision to produce a second season. As of now, Oresuki is ranked #497 on MyAnimeList, which is considered average for an anime released in 2019. The official X account has about 43,000 followers, which indicates moderate popularity. However, anime that receive a second season typically have more than 100,000 followers.
Globally, the series lags behind the more popular anime in Google search interest, which further impacts its chances of renewal. While the anime’s popularity may not place it among the most highly sought-after titles, it still holds above-average recognition, and there is a possibility of a second season depending on other factors such as international viewership and streaming performance.
When is the second season of Oresuki?
A second season of Oresuki has not been confirmed yet. However, as a result of the above assessment, we see that there is still hope for a second season. Although the disc sales were not successful, the light novel still provides sufficent source material for a second season, and the anime has plenty of fan worldwide. We think Connect will not say no to a second-season decision either. There is no official statement yet, but if a new season is approved, considering production time, it is possible to see a second season of the anime late in 2025. But keep in mind that this is just speculation and quite unlikely. We will update our article as more official information becomes available. Stay tuned.
