Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid anime series premiered on January 12, 2017, as an adaptation of Coolkyousinnjya’s manga first published in 2013. The anime in fantasy comedy and slice-of-life genres is both entertaining and peaceful. The anime was animated by Kyoto Animation, which actively produced animations recently. We also know the studio from popular anime series such as Violet Evergarden. Another famous anime owned by the studio, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, had previously been renewed for the second season and delighted its fans. With a sequel, “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S“, the anime managed to maintain its quality in the first season, and many viewers even evaluated the second season as better than the first season. The second season, licensed by the Chinese giant streamer Bilibili, met with the audience also on Funimation. The second season aired from July 8, 2021, to September 23, 2021, and fans are now excited for the third season. So, has the anime been renewed for a new season? Let’s remember the anime and see what we know about the third season together.
What would happen if you came across a dragon while wandering around on a drunk day? Even better: What if that dragon could transform into a woman? Even more perfect: If that dragon woman was your servant? All of this is just a small part of what happened to Kobayashi-san.
Kobayashi is a 25-year-old computer programmer. Her life is very boring and monotonous. Her boss gives her silly jobs and doesn’t appreciate her at all. At work, she only has one decent friend. One day, they go for a drink with Makoto, her favorite friend, and colleague, at the same time. After a long and pleasant night, Kobayashi leaves to go home. Kobayashi has a personality that loses himself every time she drinks, and that is the biggest reason why she experiences the event that will change her life that night. Our drunk hero forgets to get off the train she took to go home at her own stop and finds himself wandering in the forest on the mountain. While walking through the trees, she sees a wounded dragon with green skin. Although the dragon shuns Kobayashi, Kobayashi runs and hugs her, and this makes the dragon even angrier.
Kobayashi sees a sword stuck in the dragon’s back and jumps on the dragon’s back to extract it. Although the dragon says how dangerous it is, she doesn’t realize that nothing can stop a drunk Kobayashi. Although it is difficult, she manages to remove the sword. Having warmed to Kobayashi, the dragon transforms into a half-human form and they start drinking together. After a heated drunken argument, she proposes to the dragon, who says she is alone, to live together. Dragon Tohru is very happy about this. Kobayashi speaks of her maniacal love of servants and asks Tohru to be her servant. Tohru agrees without hesitation. The night ends with Kobayashi waking up on the train and thinking all she saw is a dream. Actually, everything is real!
Will there be a third season of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid?
The anime was previously renewed for a second season, and “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S” made its season finale with the 12th episode on September 23, 2021. The last episode we could watch was the OVA episode that we watched on January 19, 2022. As of September 3, 2022, at the time of writing, Kyoto Animation or any anime-related company has not yet renewed the anime for a third season. New-season confirmations of animes can sometimes be announced in the season finals, but unfortunately, there was no such announcement in the season finale of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S. We continue to follow the official channels for the anime’s new season confirmation. However, this process can often take a long time. The most recent example of this was four years between the anime’s first and second seasons. Since there is no official news yet, we have speculated about the new season of the anime under some main factors; let’s take a look together.
As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is originally a manga series written and illustrated by Coolkyousinnjya. Published by Futabasha, the manga began to be published in Monthly Action manga magazine in 2013. The manga, which consists of 12 volumes in total, has not been made a final yet.
Anime is generally loyal to the manga, although some parts have original content. The continuation of the manga is the harbinger of new seasons in the future. The first season of the anime covers chapters from 1 to 30. In the second season of the anime, it is adapted up to chapter 48. It coincides with the 5th volume of this anime. There are 7 volumes that have not yet been adapted into anime. It seems that the part adapted in seasons one and two is not even half of the series, and there is already enough source material for a new season.

Disc sales have declined in recent years as people turn to online platforms. However, there are still traditionalists. Although the financial contribution of disc sales does not affect the new season decisions as much as before, disc sales are still good data to see the popularity in Japan and to compare with other anime that went on disc sales in the same period. The anime’s disc sales began in September 2021 during the season finale week. The anime sold 3,447 copies in volume average in the first three volumes. This sales figure is parallel to the sales in the first season. Considered as a period, it can be considered a success. It earned about ¥113,980,000 revenue from anime disc sales in the second season and also ranks 5th among 26 anime that debuted in disc sales in the same period.
