What is the plotline of Jujutsu Kaisen?

A very old war is going on in the world that nobody notices, even though it is before the eyes. The war we are talking about takes place between supernatural monsters known as “Curses” that come from the shadows and terrorize humanity and the sorcerers known as “Jujutsu” who try to destroy these monsters using mysterious methods. When high school student Yuji Itadori finds the dried finger of the legendary Curse Sukuna Ryoumen, the young student also finds himself in the middle of this war.

Although Yuji Itadori lives a completely ordinary high school life, he is a child with tremendous physical strength. One day, he eats the finger of “Sukuna Ryomen” and takes the Curse into his soul to save a friend who was attacked by the Curse. From then on, he shares a body with Sukuna. Guided by the most powerful wizards Gojo Satoru, Itadori is accepted into the Tokyo Metropolitan Wizarding Technical High School. This organization fights the Curses, thus starting the heroic story of a boy who turns into a Curse to banish a Curse. A life he can never return to.

Manga (Main Source Material)

As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, Jujutsu Kaisen is a manga adaptation. The original manga was written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. Originally published by Shueisha and published by Viz Media in English for readers worldwide, the manga series reached 20 volumes with the latest volume titled “Sendai Colony: Semi-Feast” on August 4, 2022.

In the first season of the anime, the first 8 volumes were almost completely adapted into 24 episodes. The first season, which is largely loyal to the manga, ends with the 64th chapter. With the chapters not yet in tankobon format, 196 chapters have been released so far, and it seems like we will be able to watch more seasons after the confirmed second season.

As of August 2022, the series has totaled more than 70 million copies in circulation, and this puts the manga ahead of My Hero Academia and Tokyo Revengers.

Disc sales and exclusive distributors

Disc sales and the availability of exclusive distributors are very valuable for the anime series. Generally, animes are expected to sell over 4,000 copies for a new season confirmation. Jujutsu Kaisen disc sales are well above targets. The anime series sold 26,260 copies in the volumes’ average. The anime generated approximately ¥1,358,150,000 revenue with these disc sales and was the anime series that earned the most revenue from disc sales in the fall 2020 period. In recent years, disc sales have seriously declined with the increase in online video-watching habits. However, despite this decline, Jujutsu Kaisen managed to have a tremendous sales figure.

Disc sales on each volume

Volume 1 20.01.2021 35.040
Volume 2 17.02.2021 27.538
Volume 3 17.03.2021 29.579
Volume 4 21.04.2021 26.514
Volume 5 26.05.2021 23.861
Volume 6 23.06.2021 22.383
Volume 7 21.07.2021 22.660
Volume 8 18.08.2021 22.501

Another important factor is the profit the anime makes from distributors. In Japan, Jujutsu Kaisen is distributed by dozens of distributors. It is globally licensed by Crunchyroll and streamed by HBO Max. There does not seem to be any financial problem, and this success signals that we can see many Jujutsu Kaisen seasons in the future.

Popularity worldwide?

Anime’s popularity is also one of the factors that strengthen the possibility of a new season. While we can see how popular it is from its success in disc sales, we can see its worldwide popularity on Google search volumes; the series is searched more than other record-breaking animes. Although it is a new anime, it is among the top 50 anime in Myanimelist, and more than 3 million people follow the @Jujutsu_Kaisen_ account on Twitter. Overall, about 100k means enough popularity for an anime to get a new season confirmation. Jujutsu Kaisen has more compared to this hypothesis. With a successful IMDb score of 8.6, the anime was also rated by over 50k users on the IMDb platform.

Is there a trailer released?

The anime has been renewed for a third season and announced to air in 2023. As such, the question of whether a trailer has been released comes to the fans’ minds. Unfortunately, the anime team has yet to share a key visual or trailer for the new season. The anime’s new season is in production, and the preparation will take time. It is pretty early to see a trailer. While we are seeing some fan-made trailers with the season 2 title, none of them currently contain the clue you’re looking for for the new season. We will update this section when the trailer is released.

Is Jujutsu Kiasen 0 Movie worth watching?

The movie of the same name, belonging to the prequel series Jujutsu Kaisen 0, continues to break records.
