Golden Kamuy is an adventure and history genres anime series that started airing in 2018. The highly anticipated anime for each season is actually based on the manga of the same name written by Satoru Noda. The series’ manga nominated Crunchyroll’s best manga awards in 2017. The anime was created by Geno Studio, a subsidiary of Twin Engine and a fairly new studio. We know the studio, whose second product is Golden Kamuy, through the Pet and Kokkoku so far. The anime, also licensed by Funimation and Crunchyroll, was originally aired on Tokyo MX, ytv, STV, BS11 channels. The fourth season of the series, which fits three seasons into two years in an unusual way for the anime industry, is now eagerly awaited. The series was last released on December 21, 2020, with the third season finale. So will the anime have a fourth season?
What is the plotline of Golden Kamuy?
Sugimoto Saichi is a soldier who survived the Russo-Japanese war of the Meiji Era. During the war, due to his survival despite all conditions and combat, the soldiers nicknamed him “Immortal Sugimoto”. Sugimoto, who lost his closest friend in this war, is looking for gold by the river to fulfill his last wish. One day, while searching for gold by the river, he hears a rumor. According to this rumor, a man named Nopperabou stole the gold treasure owned by the Ainu and killed the gold owner. After this incident, he was caught by the police and thrown into Japan’s strongest prison. However, Nopperabou, who managed to hide the gold before he was caught, made a tattoo on the bodies of twenty-four prisoners in this prison, showing the gold location and made them escape from the prison. Still, they do not show the location of the gold unless all the tattoos come together. Sugimoto then decides to search for this treasure.
While Sugimoto was after a prisoner who had the tattoo, he was attacked by a bear and rescued by an Ainu girl named Asirpa. After their conversation, the two realize they have a common goal and decide to work together to find the gold. However, this job will not be as easy as they think because they are not the only ones after gold. Finding this treasure will turn into a life-and-death struggle for Sugimoto and Asirpa.
Will there be a fourth season of Golden Kamuy?
Geno Studio or any related company has not yet renewed Golden Kamuy for a fourth season. The second season of the series was confirmed at the end of the first season. On July 7, 2019, the series received its third season approval, and on October 5, 2020, it returned to the screens with its third season. When we evaluate the rising popularity and season approvals, we expect the season 4 of the series to be approved. There is no official confirmation at the moment. However, we have speculated about the fourth season of the anime.
Manga status of the anime
Original stock status is important for anime series. Because if there is not enough source material, it is impossible to make a new anime season. As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, Golden Kamuy is adapted from a manga written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. The manga series originally published by Shueisha is presented in English by Viz Media. The good news for the series, which started airing on August 21, 2014, is that the manga series is still going on.
24 volumes have been released for the manga series so far. When we generally look at the end of the third season, a total of 20 volumes were adapted to anime. Currently, there is not enough source material available for a new season. However, the continuation of the manga will solve the problem of the source material.
Popularity and the other factors
The disc (BluRay and DVD) sales are very important for anime. Anime series that generally exceed the 4,000 sales threshold is promising for a new season. The first two seasons approached this sales threshold and were considered sufficient for the third season. Third season disc sales of Golden Kamuy will start on January 28, 2021, and we will be able to comment on the sales shortly after. It is not possible to comment on the third season disc sales right now. We will update this section when the sales information becomes available.
When we look at the popularity of the anime other than disc sales, we see a popularity score of 75.6%. This score shows how popular the anime is on social media, online streaming platforms, and Google searches. Compared to other anime series on the anime list, this score is pretty enough to see a new season renewal.
On the other hand, Geno Studio is a fairly new studio, and there are three anime series released so far. Golden Kamuy is the most valuable anime series in the studio’s hands. The studio will be excited to make a new season for the anime.
When is the release date of the fourth season?
The series has not yet been renewed for a fourth season, but as a result of the evaluation, the fourth season renewal may soon. However, even if the series is renewed for a new season soon, we will wait at least a year for a new season. The source material is not enough yet, and considering the previous season’s confirmations, a new season of the series may be on screen in early 2022.
