“Girlfriend, Girlfriend” or originally known as Kanojo mo Kanojo is an anime series that airs in the summer of 2021. The romantic comedy anime is adapted from the manga of Hiroyuki, whom we also know with Aho-Girl, another comedy anime. Like its anime series, the manga published by Kodansha is fairly new and appeared for the first time in 2020. Animations are made by Tezuka Productions, which also undertakes animations of Adachi and Shimamura anime adaptation. The Crunchyroll licensed anime originally aired on JNN and AT-X for 12 episodes from July 3, 2021, to September 18, 2021. It is wondered if there will be a second season of the series. What is ‘Girlfriend, Girlfriend’ telling about?
Naoya Mukai has had a platonic love affair with his childhood friend Saki Saki for years. Eventually, one day, they become lovers. Just when he is about to concentrate and dedicate himself to the relationship, Naoya receives Nagisa Minase’s confession that she likes him. Although at first, he thinks of rejecting Nagisa and wants to stay loyal to his current relationship, then he realizes that he doesn’t want to upset Nagisa. But he also doesn’t want to betray his already existing girlfriend. Naoya thinks about this issue and offers a solution to the complex situation. He talks to Nagisa and Saki and tells that he decided to be lovers with both of them at the same time. Saki initially opposes this idea completely and rejects the offer, but after Nagisa and Naoya’s intense insistence, she reluctantly accepts the relationship. Strange events in the romantic comedy genre await our characters, who have a triple-sided relationship that is different from the general order of society.
Will there be a second season of the anime?
As of October 18, 2021, at the time of writing, Tezuka Productions, manga publisher Kodansha, or any anime-related company has not yet renewed the anime for a second season. There are also no cancellations yet, and it can sometimes take many years for anime to be approved for a new season. Sometimes we can see new season announcements at the end of the first season, but unfortunately, “Girlfriend, Girlfriend” was not one of these animes. Although there is no official statement yet, it is possible to predict to a large extent whether the anime will have a new season. Manga Status
As we mentioned at the beginning of our article, the manga of the series is written and illustrated by Hiroyuki. The manga series, which started to be published on March 4, 2020, has reached 8 volumes as of now. Kodansha also brings the series to readers in English. It was adapted up to Chapter 33 in the anime’s first season, which coincides with the middle of the 4th volume. The remaining source material is almost on par with that used in the first season. This means that enough source material is currently available to create a new season. Otherwise, a new season would be almost impossible.
The popularity of the series
Since animes are for-profit productions, it is important how much profit they provide to their producers. This return is usually directly proportional to popularity because the more views, the higher the income. When we look at the Myanimelist data of the anime, we see that it ranks 794th in popularity. Considering that the anime is quite new, this ranking is not bad at all.
Anime is currently very popular in Google searches. The fact that it has just been published also has an effect, but if this search volume can be maintained, a new season is inevitable. Anime is currently searching as much as popular animes like Made in Abyss and Domestic Girlfriend. On its official Twitter page in Japan, on the other hand, it has a parallel fan base. The anime, which is followed by 102k users on Twitter, is one of the rare anime that exceeds the 100k threshold that we generally assume. When is the second season of the anime?
A second season of the anime has yet to be confirmed, but we speculated above about a new season based on all that is known so far. The first announcement of the anime was made in November 2020, and the anime met with the audience in July 2021. Girlfriend, Girlfriend Season 2 Plotline
At the end of the anime’s first season, Nagisa no longer forces herself to stay back and asks Saki to agree to compete to become Naoya’s higher-level girlfriend. Shino is shocked to learn that Saki is dating someone who doesn’t even respect her or their relationship. For Saki’s sake, he decides to find a way to end her relationship with Naoya. But Saki is not complaining about the situation she is in because Naoya does her best to please both of his girlfriends. Meanwhile, Rika is trying to get Naoya’s attention.
In season 2, we will see Rika more on the screen. Now she will be a close member of Naoya, Saki, and Nagisa’s friend circle. As in the first season, Rika will continue trying to become Naoya’s third girlfriend in the next episodes. Meanwhile, Shino also finds ways to break Saki and Naoya up. Shino’s feelings for Saki will increase with each passing day. The boyfriend competition between Saki and Nagisa will increase this season.
