Gakuen Babysitters is an anime series that came out in 2018 and is a beloved school, comedy, and slice-of-life genre. The series is an adaptation based on a manga by Hari Tokeino. This adorable anime was created by the Brain’s Base studio which we know from the In/Spectre anime series. The anime is directed by Shūsei Morishita, who is also in In/Specter’s storyboard team. Originally aired on Tokyo MX, Sun TV, and BS11 from January 7, 2018, to March 25, 2018, the anime was also listed on Crunchyroll. Gakuen Babysitters in which sweet babies warms us has only been one season so far. But fans want more; so, will Gakuen Babysitters have a second season?
What is the plotline of the Gakuen Babysitters?
High school student Ryuuichi loses his family in a plane crash and is left alone with his new-to-walk brother Kotarou. They are adopted by the director of Morinomiya Academy, who lost her son and daughter-in-law in the same plane crash. However, the headmistress has only one condition: Ryuuichi will be a babysitter in the academy’s kindergarten in her spare time.
In one of its subtexts, Gakuen Babysitters describes the trauma a high school-age child experiences when left without a parent. However, Ryuuichi never encounters a bullying school friend or an adult with a blunt conscience. Similarly, the show, in portraying a baby left without parents, presents normal, conscientious people.
Viewers over the age of twenty might see this as a negative aspect, but the anime’s goal is to deliver a heartwarming story that occasionally brings tears to your eyes. Considering the production’s target audience is children and young people, expecting a deeply tragic or somber narrative would be unfair.
Will there be a second season of the anime?
As of December 4, 2024, the animation studio Brain’s Base or any related company has not yet renewed the anime for a second season. It can take years for anime to get a new season confirmation, and we have seen similar delays for many other series. Since there is no official statement yet, we will speculate on the likelihood of a sequel. The most important factors influencing the approval of a new season are the adequacy of the source material, the anime’s popularity, and its financial success.
Manga status of the anime
As we mentioned before, Gakuen Babysitters has been adapted for TV from the manga series written and illustrated by Hari Tokeino. The manga series, which began serialization in LaLa magazine in 2009, is still ongoing as of December 4, 2024, at the time of writing this article. This continuation is crucial, as it ensures there’s plenty of material for future anime adaptations for next seasons.
The latest volume of the manga has been recently published and now there are totals 26 volumes. The first season of the anime adapted content from the initial 6 volumes. Later on, the OVA has been adapted from the events in the 9th Volume of manga. So, there is sufficient source material not just for a second season, but potentially even more.
Volume | Chapters Adapted | Skipped Chapters |
---|---|---|
Volume 1 | Chapters 1-5 | Chapters 3-4 |
Volume 2 | Chapters 6-10 | Chapter 10 |
Volume 3 | Chapters 11-15.2 | None |
Volume 4 | Chapters 16-21 | Chapters 18-19 |
Volume 5 | Chapters 22-27 | Chapter 25 |
Volume 6 | Chapters 28-32.2 | Chapters 27, 30-32 |
Volume 9 | (OVA) Chapters 49-50 32.2 | – |
In terms of manga availability, there are no obstacles preventing a second season from being produced. However, source material is just one of several factors in determining whether a new season gets greenlit.
Popularity and Disc Sales of the Anime
Disc sales are a crucial revenue stream for anime. Typically, an anime is expected to sell over 4,000 copies to justify the production of a new season. Unfortunately, Gakuen Babysitters fell short in this regard, with only 1,644 copies sold. Given this sales figure, a renewal for a second season seems unlikely. However, in recent years, even anime with low disc sales have been renewed, as the demand for physical discs has diminished. Nowadays, exclusive distributors and online viewerships have become more important metrics for success.
In terms of global popularity, Google searches offer valuable insight. Gakuen Babysitters garners search traffic comparable to other mid-tier anime series such as Tsugumomo and Devils Line. Additionally, on X, the series has about 65.4k followers. However, for an anime to secure a second season, it typically requires stronger metrics. While the prospects for a new season seem slim based on these factors, the anime world is unpredictable, and a new season could still happen given the remaining source material.
When is the second season of Gakuen Babysitters?
No official announcement has been made for the second season of the series. However, as a result of the above evaluation, the second season of anime is very unlikely. Despite having average popularity on online platforms and enough source material from the manga, disc sales are quite low, and the popularity remains average. The lack of any news or rumors regarding a renewal since the first season’s release also diminishes hopes for a new season. We don’t believe the production team will take the risk of moving forward with a second season. We can suggest to the fans that they can read the rest of the story from the manga series, since there is plenty of material still there, maybe even starting from the first chapter as there are slight differences in the anime adaptation. That being said, the anime world is full of surprises. If the second season does get approved soon, it is unlikely to air before 2026, considering typical production timelines for anime.
