Gakuen Babysitters is an anime series that came out in 2018 and is a beloved school, comedy, and slice of life genre. An adaptation, the series is based on a manga written by Hari Tokeino. This adorable anime was created by the Brain’s Base studio that we know from the In/Spectre anime series. The anime is directed by Shūsei Morishita, who is also in In/Specter’s storyboard team. Originally aired on Tokyo MX, Sun TV, BS11 from January 7, 2018, to March 25, 2018, the anime was also listed on Crunchyroll. The anime in which sweet babies warms us has only been one season so far. But fans want more; so, will Gakuen Babysitters have a second season?
What is the plotline of the Gakuen Babysitters?
High school student Ryuuichi loses his family in a plane crash and is left alone with his new-to-walk brother Kotarou. They are adopted by the director of Morinomiya Academy, who lost her son and daughter-in-law in the same plane crash. However, the headmistress has only one condition: Ryuuichi will be a babysitter in the academy’s kindergarten in her spare time.
In one of his sub-texts, Gakuen Babysitters describes the trauma a high school-age child will experience when left without a parent. However, he never encounters a bully school friend, and he does not meet an adult with a blunt conscience. Likewise, the production in which we watch a baby left without a parent also brings quite normal, conscientious people in front of him. Someone over the age of twenty may see this as a negative aspect, but the anime’s challenge is to present a sweet story that will fill your eyes occasionally. Considering that my production’s target audience is children and young people, it would be unfair to expect a very deep, very sad story.
Will there be a second season of the anime?
As of May 30, 2022, the animation studio Brain’s Base or any related company has not yet renewed the anime for a second season. It can take years for anime to get a new season confirmation. We have come across examples of this many times. As there is no official statement yet, we will speculate on the sequel. The most important factors affecting an anime’s approval for a new season are source material adequacy, popularity, and financial conditions.
Manga status of the anime
As we mentioned before, Gakuen Babysitters has been adapted for TV from the manga series written and illustrated by Hari Tokeino. The manga series that started publishing in LaLa magazine in 2009 is still ongoing. The continuation of the manga series is important as it will create stock material for the anime, and this is good news.
The last volume of the manga series of Gakuen Babysitters, which consists of 22 volumes in total, was released on October 5, 2021. In the first season of the series, stories from the first 15 volumes were adapted to the anime. However, this part is a little misleading. Although 15 volumes were used, many story elements were omitted, and there are enough stories for the second or even a third season. In terms of the source material, there is no obstacle to seeing a new season. Of course, this is not the only criterion.
Popularity and disc sales of the anime
Disc sales are very important for an anime. Anime’s biggest source of income is disc sales, and an anime is expected to sell an average of over 4,000 copies in order to have a new season. Unfortunately, School Babysitters were far from targeted in disc sales and only sold 1,644. In these sales figures, an anime is generally not renewed for a second season. But in recent years, we see that even anime with low disc sales have been renewed. Because of the change in anime watching habits, the demand for discs has decreased, and now exclusive distributors and viewerships are more valuable.
Google searches are an excellent place to see the anime’s global popularity. When we look at it, we see that Gakuen Babysitters is searched as much as animes that are on the average line, such as Tsugumomo or Devils Line. On Twitter, they have around 45k followers. But an anime needs more than this to be confirmed for a new season. When we look at these metrics, we think that the new season of anime is very difficult, but the anime world is still full of surprises, and a new season is still not impossible since there is enough source material.
When is the second season of Gakuen Babysitters?
No official announcement has been made for the second season of the series. However, as a result of the above evaluation, the second season of anime is very unlikely. Despite having average popularity on online platforms and having enough source material from the manga, disc sales are quite low and the popularity is average. Financially, we don’t think the production team will take a risk by deciding on a second season. However, the anime world is full of surprises. If the second season is approved, we can only see a new season in 2023 – 2024, considering production time.
