Dom, whose first episode aired on May 10, 2021, is an Amazon Prime Video series in the genre of crime and drama. The first season consists of 8 episodes which have a runtime of 50-63 minutes each. Breno Silveira is the director of the show. The audience knows him from “Two Sons of Francisco”, which tells the story of Zezé di Camargo & Luciano. The script of the production was written by Higia Ikeda and Fabio Mendes. The leading role in the series is Gabriel Leone, who plays Roberto Carlos in the 2019 biopic “Minha Fama de Mau” inspired by the life of Erasmo Carlos. Leone plays drug-addicted criminal Pedro Dom in Dom. Flávio Tolezani, who has an extensive career in soap operas, plays the role of Victor Dantas, Pedro’s father, who will tell the story throughout the series. Dantas previously appeared as Roy in the TV series “Verdades Secretas” and was nominated as a ‘Breakthrough Actor’ for the 2017 Contigo TV Award for his performance. Antônio Pinto, who composed the music for the documentary Pelé, produces the show’s music. Made in Brazil as the country’s first scripted original series, the production was filmed in Rio de Janeiro and its language is Portuguese. The attention-taking TV series Dom received a ranking of 7.1 on IMDb. In addition, it is only suitable for 18-year-olds and over.
Dom has a promising future as it has been translated to more than 30 languages and is streaming in at least 200 countries. Malu Miranda, the Head of Original Content of Amazon Studios in Brazil, has highly praised the show. She also shared that the voice actors in France and Spain enjoyed the series so much that they have become big fans of the cast members. According to her, this is an indicator that the show will be a huge success. The audience has wonder about season 2. So, what we know about the second season so far?
As of Jun 20, 2021, Dom has not yet been renewed for a second season. Seeing that the first season has just been released, we cannot say Amazon Prime will cancel or renew the series for season 2. They will take some time to decide the future of the show based on the views and ratings. As season 2 has not been officially announced, no release date information has been unveiled either. However, Amazon’s press release detailing the opening season mentions an “eight-episode first season of Dom” which would suggest that there will be a second season if the series proves popular enough. The first season was carried out on the first day of the partial lockdown in Rio de Janeiro due to the pandemic outbreak in May 2021. Since none of the scenes were shot inside a studio, the filming for season 1 was an extensive process involving about 170 locations. If things go according to time frame, we might have to wait a while because we have seen that Amazon Prime releases two subsequent seasons with a gap of at least 16 to 18 months. Therefore, we can expect Dom season 2 to release sometime in late 2022 or early 2023.
What is the plotline of Dom and what is expecting?
Inspired by a true story, the series tells the story of Victor, a police officer who has devoted his life to fighting with drugs, and his drug-addict son, Pedro Dom, who has come to be known as one of Rio de Janeiro’s biggest and most wanted criminals. Set during two time periods, Dom depicts the journey of father and son, who often live opposite lives that mirror and complement each other, as both face situations that blur the line between right and wrong.
The story, which composes of domestic violence, drama, tragedy, and most importantly, unlovingness, proves that the facts turn out to be stranger than fiction while passing through Rio de Janeiro. The scenes first focus on Pedro. His change in the show over the years is eye-catching. When the years showed the beginning of the 2000s, Rio de Janeiro was fluctuating with a big theft hit. Then some criminal organizations started to be exposed. Since the person who committed the theft was blond and blue-eyed, the case had a great impact on people. Pedro, who has been tried for many ultimate crimes over the years, already lives in a world of drugs. On the other side, Victor appears as a leader who has devoted his life to be a good policeman. For years, he has made great efforts for the well-being of his son Pedro, but the result has not been as he expected. He took Pedro to rehabilitation centers at a young age, got him from police stations, and eventually saw his son among the most wanted criminals in the city. But Pedro has no intention of giving up.
Dom also follows a group of friends with different backgrounds and lifestyles but share their love for BDSM. The characters are at different relationship stages, such as monogamous or non-monogamous, married or unmarried. Dom follows them as they explore sex outside the boundaries of what society considers normal. It also shows how people can find themselves living out their fantasies with others without fear.
At the end of the season, when newspaper headlines claimed that Pedro kidnapped a rich girl, Pedro played the disappearing act again. When Pedro rode his bike through the tunnel, the police stopped him. He threw a grenade at them, and the final episode ended with that ambiguous note.
In real life, shortly after this incident, Pedro was shot in the chest in a building in a luxurious neighborhood. This was a few days before his 24th birthday. Since some of the show’s content is fictional, in the second season, we may see the trouble Pedro Dom is facing.
