“Demon Lord, Retry!” (aka Maou-sama, Retry!) is a Japanese anime series published in 2019 in the genre of Fantasy and Isekai (otherworld). Originally based on a light novel series, the author of the story is Kurone Kanzaki. The anime adaptation licensed by Funimation was originally aired on Tokyo MX, and BS Fuji local channels. The anime was created by the Ekachi Epilka studio, which we haven’t seen much of before. The studio made its first appearance with “Crossing Time” before, and the most popular anime the studio has animated to date is ‘Demon Lord, Retry!’. The anime’s first season consisted of 12 episodes and was broadcast from July 4, 2019, to September 19, 2019. We haven’t watched a new episode for over a year. So, will there be a second season of the series? Let’s remember the series and see what we know about the second season so far.
Main Plot: Oono Akira is an ordinary person working for an online gaming company. He often plays the character of the Dark Lord. However, when he opens the game one day, he enters the game’s fantasy world as the Dark Lord. There he meets an injured girl, and they start their journey together. But some nations and saints are trying to destroy the mighty Dark Lord. Wherever they go, they get in trouble.
What we can watch in season 2: There was only one question in the minds of those who finished the first season of the anime. Is it over? Because the first season of the series felt unfinished. The lack of war and enemies in the last episodes makes us think that a great preparation was left for the second season. Will he be able to reach out to the angels and advance their business? Our demon king is both strong and wise. As in some anime, the main character is not weak, making the audience happy. We expect to see more war scenes in the second season.
Will there be a second season of ‘Demon Lord, Retry!’?
As of September 3, 2022, at the time of writing, the anime has not yet been renewed for a second season. Studio Ekachi Epilka or Funimation did not leak that there is whether work for the series’s second season. For some reason, it can take years to renew an anime for a new season. So, could there be a new season of the series? We can make some predictions on this issue. Some parameters such as light novel status, popularity, disc sales, and exclusive distributors affect the second season decisions. Let’s review together.
Light Novel status of the anime
Demon Lord, Retry!’s anime is adapted from a written source. As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, the main story is based on the novel series written by Kurone Kanzaki. The light novel series, which started to be published by Futabasha in July 2017, is still ongoing. The continuing light novel is good news as it provides the source material for the anime and anime is a light novel promotion in one regard. The series currently consists of 8 volumes in total and the last volume was released on November 29, 2021. J-Novel Club publishes the light novel series in English.
Anime covers the first 2 volumes of the light novel series. The good news is that with a simple proportionality calculation, there is enough source material for more than a new season. It is possible to see the second and the third seasons of the series in theory. The source material availability is a very important criterion, but not enough alone.

The popularity and the disc sales of Demon Lord, Retry!
Source material availability is always important but its popularity is also an important criterion. Anime ranked 966th on Myanimelist’s popularity ranking. This score can be considered average but not sufficient for the second season. Besides, it is only followed by 18k people on Twitter (@maousama_anime). Although there is a worldwide fan base, anime is really underrated in Japan. Also, the cumulative circulation of the original novel is around 200,000, which is not a very good sale for a written work.
Animes are for-profit productions, and often the popularity and disc sales in Japan determine the anime’s new season decisions. Basically, the anime is expected to sell 4,000 discs to have a new season. But “Demon Lord, Retry!” sold only 302 units in its first season. Considering this sales figure, a second season is almost impossible.
On the other hand, the studio does not appear to have any work for the next 2022-2023. They are a fairly new anime studio, and we cannot guarantee the new season.
“To be continued!”
At the end of the” Demon Lord, Retry!” first season finale, there was a “to be continued” statement, which aired on September 19, 2019. Although this statement raises hopes for the second season, the creators may not stand behind this promise. The reason for this is the possibility that a second season may not provide a sufficient financial return. However, such a promise is not easily given in the animes, and we see that the doors are open for a second season.

When is the release date of ‘Demon Lord, Retry!’?
As of September 3, 2022, “Demon Lord, Retry!” has not yet been renewed for the second season. It seems a new season is unlikely due to low disc sales and low popularity in Japan. However, the light novel of the series provides sufficient source material and it was stated to be continued, and always there will be a second season chance. The anime of the series was announced in 2018 and was on the screens in the summer of 2019. The average production period can be considered as one year. The series may be on the screen with a new season around 2024 if the creators and publisher renew it. Till the series is renewed, we would like to recommend an anime similar to this series. Its reviews are better in many ways, and if you like this series, you shouldn’t miss it. The name of the recommended anime is Overlord (2015).
