Asteroid in Love (aka Koisuru Asuteroido) is one of the “Slice of life” genre anime released in 2020. A manga adaptation, the series is licensed by Funimation and Crunchyroll. The anime, licensed by these two giant anime distributors, had the chance to gain viewers from all over the world. Asteroid in Love was created by Doga Koba, a long-established Japanese animation studio. We know the studio from famous anime such as Osamake and The Helpful Fox Senko-san. The anime originally aired on AT-X, Tokyo MX, SUN, KBS, TVA, BS11 on January 3, 2020. The details of the second season of the series, whose last episode, called Connected Cosmos, was published on March 27, 2020, are curious. So has the anime been renewed for a second season?
What was the Asteroid in Love about?
As a little girl, Mira Kinohata meets a boy named Ao at the camp. Looking at the starry sky, Mira learns that there is a star of the same name as herself, but not a star named Ao. The two promise each other to one day discover asteroids together and find a star Ao can name after. A few years later, Mira enrolls at Hoshizaki High School and decides to join the astronomy club to fulfill her promise.
However, she learns that her astronomy club will be merged with the geological research community. When she tells Ao Manaka about the club room situation, it comes as an even greater shock to find out that Ao is a girl.
Will there be a second season of Asteroid in Love?
As of August 22, 2021, Crunchyroll or Funimation has not yet renewed the series for a second season. However, this is a situation we are used to in anime. Asteroid in Love was one of the anime that was released to support the sales of the manga. There are a few factors that we can evaluate whether the anime will have a second season or not.
Manga Status of the anime
Asteroid in Love is a manga adaptation anime. Written and illustrated by manga writer Quro, the manga made its debut in January 2017. The good news is that the manga is still going on. In total, four volumes have been released so far.

A volume for the manga series is released every year, and we can expect a new volume in 2022. However, the manga doesn’t have an English publisher yet, so it’s a bit difficult to follow. With the volume released in May 2021, unused material is the same as the source material used in the anime’s first season. Maybe we haven’t seen a new season so far because there was not enough source material for a new season. The first anime season was adapted from the first two-volume of the manga, and the creators now have two more volumes available for a second season.
The popularity of the anime
For an anime to have a new season, source material adequacy is important. Otherwise, it is not possible to see a new season for an anime adapted from the manga. But there is one more important factor, which is popularity. As animes are for-profit productions, they have some financial goals, and to achieve these goals, they must be successful in disc sales or online viewing platforms. Although the Koisuru Asuteroido manga has strong popularity in Japan, unfortunately, we cannot say the same for the anime series.
The anime’s disc sales were made in the 2020 winter season. The series, which sold 3 volume discs in total, sold 1464 copies on average. When this sales figure is evaluated, the overall target of animes is well below the accepted 4000 units. We know that disc sales have decreased in recent years with the change of habits. However, we cannot say that anime has strong popularity on other platforms.
Anime is ranked 2024 according to Myanimelist data. (Popularity ranking.) On the other hand, we do not see a strong search volume in Google searches. 42.4k people follow the Twitter account of the series. The popularity in Japan is holding up well compared to the worldwide popularity, but it doesn’t seem strong enough to get a second season.
When is the release date of the second season?
Despite all this, we witnessed that many animes got a chance for a second season despite the low popularity. If there is a surprise renewal, we can see the new season of the anime in 2022.
