Arifureta, or with its full name “Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest” is a fantasy anime series that first aired in the summer of 2019. Although many anime lovers know the series with its anime, manga lovers first met the series with a light novel published in 2015 or its novel published in 2013. The story, written by Ryo Shirakome, was animated by White Fox and met with the audience on July 8, 2019. The studio, which has signed popular anime such as Re:Zero and Goblin Slayer, added Arifureta among them. The second season of Arifureta was animated by Studio Mother, who is still very new in the industry, and aired weekly between January 13, 2022, and March 31, 202. The anime, licensed by Crunchyroll and broadcast by many local channels in Japan, is among the most popular productions today. But will this popularity be enough to see the third season? Has the anime been renewed for a third season?
What do fans think about the second season?
Concerns were high, especially about the studio change. The fact that an experienced studio-like White Fox would not take part in the second season made them think that the visual atmosphere of the anime would be lost. However, in the anime’s second season, the animations were as successful as in the first season, but the drawings were more successful than before. There are also differences in the lighting, and many viewers positively evaluated the new mood of the anime.

Fans have waited for a renewal for a long time after the anime’s first season, and it looks like this wait may happen again. However, we were almost sure that the anime would get a new season approval during this wait, and our predictions were correct. Now, in the light of what is known, we speculated whether the anime could have a new season. Often the light novel status, financial issues, and popularity determine the decision for a new season. So is everything okay for Arifureta to have a new season?
Light novel status in terms of a new season
The light novel which the anime series is adapted from is written by Ryo Shirakome and illustrated by Takayaki. The series published by Overlap has reached 12 volumes as of today and is published on average two volumes per year. The last volume, which met with the readers, was published on January 25, 2022, and will meet with the English readers digitally in the coming days.
The story up to the 6th volume of the light novel series was adapted into the two seasons of the anime. The remaining source material is 6 volumes as of now. Exactly half is still waiting to be adapted. It seems that there is enough source material to create a new season. In addition, the fact that the light novel series is still ongoing is one of the details that strengthen the possibilities of the new season.
Popularity and others
Although sufficient source material is available, this alone is not enough. Only a very few anime series get a chance for a new season, and strong popularity is required for this chance. Arifureta is currently the 319th most popular anime according to Myanimelist data, and this ranking is above average. 83k people follow Arifureta’s official Twitter page. Although we see that anime that get season approval usually have over 100k followers, this number of followers is also not bad. On the other hand, when we look at Google searches, we see that the searches for anime have increased with the 2nd season. For the sake of clarity, we can say that the anime series is currently more searched than popular anime such as Noragami and Goblin Slayer.
When we look at the disc sales, we see that the first volume of the second season sold 1759 units. That’s almost half of the sales in the first season. Although it seems that the targets have not been reached, we need to consider the decrease in disc sales in recent years. However, it should not be ignored that the new season of Demon Slayer sold more than 20k in the same period. Although things are not going well in disc sales, the financial gap here seems to have been closed by exclusive distributors. Both seasons of the anime were broadcast globally by the giant distributor Hulu. In summary, we think that the possibility of a new season is high in terms of financial issues and popularity.
When is the third season of the anime?
The anime’s third season has not yet been confirmed. However, according to the estimation we made as a result of the concrete parameters above, the probability of a new season is relatively high. We think the anime will have a third season in the coming years. However, since there is no season in production yet, we may have to wait a little longer. Considering the production and renewal time, it looks like we won’t be able to see the third season of the anime before 2024. However, these are only guesses for now, and we will update our article as more official information becomes available.
